After 10 years of bringing an eclectic range of DJs and cocktails to Des Moines, Lime Lounge has closed its doors.

The nightclub first opened in Ingersoll Avenue in 2009 and later moved to the East Village at 435 East Grand Ave. in 2011, doubling the size of its space.

The 1,700-square-foot bar was known for its intimate dance floor, patio space and list of specialty cocktails.

But following two shootings that occurred outside of the bar in January, the bar suffered financial losses due to the city "unfairly targeting" the bar, according to a previous interview with the owners, George and Cornelius Qualley.

"The last song has been played, the last drink has been poured, but the memories of some very special times will remain with us, and we hope they will remain with all of you," read a Facebook post announcing Lime Lounge's closure. "It’s time to turn out the lights and make room for new things to take flight."

In January, two shootings happened outside of the bar within a two-week period and police alleged they were preceded by disputes inside Lime Lounge.

Following the shootings, Des Moines city officials and police pointed out the bar as a troublesome spot, dating back several years.

But both Qualley brothers alleged the police and city officials unfairly scrutinized and condemned the bar, resulting in financial losses.

Two lawsuits were filed for at least $12.5 million by the brothers: One regarding a Des Moines ordinance and another for malicious prosecution, libel and defamation by Des Moines police and city officials. It also alleges that the city tries to close down bars that play hip-hop music.

The lawsuits are still ongoing.

“At this point, we’re trending significantly lower than we were last year,” George Qualley said during an interview in June. He said the bar would have gone out of business if the brothers did not own the building that houses Lime Lounge.
