How Donald Trump helped Chris Soules get a new job
The star of ABC's the Bachelor was just hired by an Iowa farm real estate company. It all started with a Donald Trump selfie.
When Donald Trump walked into a West Des Moines hotel ballroom for the Land Investment Expo, the one person he wanted to meet was Chris Soules.
Soules, the Iowa farmboy who starred on ABC’s The Bachelor, was among the big-name guests at the annual real estate conference. The two took a photo together, which Trump posted on Instagram.
“That’s when the light turned on for me,” said Steve Bruere, CEO of Peoples Company, the farm and land real estate company that hosts the expo.
That was nearly a year ago, well before Soules went on Dancing with Stars and Trump surged to the front of Republican race for president.
Now, Peoples Company has hired Soules as a land investment specialist. Soules will help broker deals with celebrities, athletes, musicians and business moguls who want to buy farms or recreational land in Iowa. The idea is that he can make connections with clients the average farm real estate agent can’t, Bruere said.
That's not to say Soules won't help Joe Soybean Farmer buy more acres from time to time. But according to Peoples Company, his job will also entail speaking at conferences and seminars and attend sporting and entertainment events and host tours and trips as part of his work for with Peoples Company, the firm said in a news release.
Soules has years of experience in agricultural real estate. After graduating from Iowa State University he worked as a farm manager and real estate agent with Hertz Farm Management and then for Total Realty in DeWitt, Iowa. Most recently, he sold real estate for Summit Farms, the company of Iowa agribusiness millionaire and Republican power-broker Bruce Rastetter.
According to Peoples Company, Soules has sold more than $200 million in real estate in the past 10 years.
“Chris is someone we would want to have on our team whether he is a celebrity or not,” Bruere said. “He’s been very active in real estate investment and has a knack and a passion for it.”
Soules still lives on a farm near Arlington, Iowa. Bruere, whose company is based in Clive, recently visited Soules on his farm and said he expects Soules to spend his time on the road or working from home.
The company didn’t release any details about Soules’ love life. After being eliminated from ABC’s The Bachelorette, Soules was selected to star in the following season of the Bachelor. He gave his final rose to Whitney Bischoff, but the two announced in May that they had split.
