Lululemon opening in Des Moines' East Village
Before you head to the East Village's newest retail shop, get a peek inside the new West Elm store in Des Moines.
Lululemon Athletica, a high-end athletic apparel retailer from Canada, is opening a store in Des Moines' East Village.
The chain is set to open June 1 in 219 E. Grand, the six-story commercial and residential building that is anchored by West Elm home furnishings store. Lululemon sells clothing designed for yoga, running and cycling for women, men and girls.
For now, Lululemon plans a pop-up store at the location, said Tim Rypma, who owns the building along with East Village investor developers Jim Cownie, Paul Hayes, Sloan Cownie and Jake Christensen.
"If they meet their sales projections they will potentially turn it into a permanent store," he said.
A Lululemon spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
This will be the second foray in the East Village for Lululemon. It had a showroom that was open three days a week for about two years. It then opened its permanent store at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines in 2014.
Lululemon is taking the last commercial bay in 219 E. Grand.
It will occupy about 1,500 square feet between Velvet Coat and West Elm. Velvet Coat, a locally owned high-end women's clothing store, moved to the building in 2017 from its old East Village location at 500 E. Locust St.
In addition to ground-floor retail, 219 E. Grand has 98 apartments on five floors.
The development team is also responsible for the 600-stall parking garage and a mixed-use office and retail building, 111 E. Grand, immediately to the east. Plans for another commercial development south of the parking garage are in the works.
