The 75-acre development north of the Raccoon River will have 1,100 housing units and take 20 years to complete. Des Moines Register
Mad Meatball, a pizzeria formerly in the East Village, will move into the first floor of a new apartment building currently under construction on the southern edge of downtown Des Moines.
The pizza shop will open at LINC at Gray's Station in spring 2020. Located on the corner of S.W. 11th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, it will have 3,000 square feet of space and an outdoor patio.
Mad Meatball closed its East Village location at 401 S.E. Fifth St. in April. SKØL, a Nordic-inspired bar, opened in its place.
"We've been searching for a new home for Mad Meatball since making our announcement on Facebook earlier this year," owner Andy Hartman said in a news release. "While leaving the building we've called home for so many years wasn’t an easy decision, we know that this prime location will give us a great connection to downtown residents and visitors as well as more space to grow."
The restaurant is known for its eclectic, retro feel, serving pizza, wings and meatballs in a family-friendly, sports-themed environment.
The LINC apartments building is Hubbell Realty Co.'s first development in Gray's Station, a new 75-acre neighborhood on the southern edge of downtown. It will have 195 units in five buildings. The first phase is expected to open in the spring.
Gray’s Station will cover most of the empty land south of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway between S.W. 11th and S.W. 16th streets.
It will have more than 1,100 housing units, some small commercial districts and a network of parks linked by a new pedestrian bridge to Gray's Lake Park. Plans call for both rental and for-sale properties, including detached single-family homes, townhouses, apartments, condos and possibly senior housing.
The bike trail and pedestrian bridge are expected to open this fall.
