Hy-Vee's Wahlburgers to open this summer at Jordan Creek
After months of hype, a few delays and some soft openings over the weekend, the new Wahlburgers restaurant opened to an eager public this morning in Detroit's Greektown district.
The Wahlburgers restaurant planned for Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines will open this summer, said franchise owner Hy-Vee Inc.
Hy-Vee is wading through city approvals before submitting final plans to Jordan Creek officials, Hy-Vee said. Hy-Vee signed a deal with Wahlburgers last summer to open and operate 26 Wahlburgers stores in the markets where the West Des Moines-based grocery store operates.
“We are still finalizing the renderings for the building,” said Tina Potthoff, Hy-Vee spokeswoman. Plans call for the building’s front to be refaced and a tower built on the corner of the property that will feature the Wahlburgers logo, a large green W.
The restaurant is taking up 6,088 square feet in the mall’s Village area next to Bar Louie in the space that formerly housed Family Christian bookstore.
The Hingham, Mass.-based Wahlburgers chain is owned by actor Mark Wahlberg and his brothers Paul and Donnie. Hy-Vee also plans to soon add the hamburgers and other Wahlburgers items to the menus at its Market Grille restaurants.
Hy-Vee is planning to soon open its first Wahlburgers at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, and has been scouting Kansas City for a location.
Along with burgers, Wahlburgers serves haddock, chicken, sloppy joes, onion rings, tater tots and vegetarian entrees. It also has frappes (a whipped concoction of milk and ice cream) and floats.
Hy-Vee also has a deal with Mark Wahlberg, a fitness enthusiast, to sell his Performance Inspired nutrition products, including protein powders and bars in its stores.
Hy-Vee is one of several franchisees Wahlburgers has signed to operate its restaurants. Another grocery store chain, Meijer has plans to build Wahlburgers restaurants and park Wahlburgers food trucks at some of its stores.
