Sweet Swirls Rolled Ice Cream is opening its second metro area location.
The newest store will debut Saturday at 5525 Merle Hay Road, Suite 180, in the Johnston Station retail center in Johnston.
Owner Spencer Quick opened his first Sweet Swirls last year in Ankeny. He started the business in a food truck before moving into a brick and mortar at 303 S.W. School St.
The rolls are made when ice cream is mixed with fruits, cereals, nuts, candy pieces or cookie dough and poured onto a cold plate and then rolled into swirls and stacked inside a cup. It’s garnished with toppings or sauces.
The Johnston shop has more plates to roll ice cream, which Quick said should help "move the line of customers faster."
The rolled ice cream craze got its start in Thailand. Quick saw a video of the process online and thought it would go over well here. His first shop has been a success, so he decided to expand.
Hours are noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Another rolled ice cream shop, Ding’s Rolled Ice Cream & Crepes, has opened at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines. The shop is in a kiosk in the lower level center court.
