Empty Legends restaurant in Johnston gets a new tenant
The metro's restaurant choices are growing. Here's 10 new eateries that have opened this year.
Five19 Restaurant is giving new life to the former Legends American Grill in Johnston.
Amy and Doug Lull of Cumming hope to open the new eatery at 8460 Birchwood Court on Aug. 23. Five19 will feature a menu similar to Legends but with a few tweaks, Amy Lull said. The couple has added avocado toast, corn dip, walnut burgers and other items to the menu along with steaks and burgers, she said.
“The main thing we are going to focus on is great customer service,” she said.
The couple is brightening up the inside of the restaurant but keeping much of the old eatery, she said. They have taken the small televisions out of the booths and will partition off part of the dining room for use as a gathering space for meetings and parties.
After 23 years, Legends American Grill closed its Johnston location, the last of a chain of casual dining restaurants serving steak, chicken and seafood dishes as well as soups, salads and sandwiches. At its peak, Legends had locations in Pleasant Hill, downtown Des Moines and the original Legends restaurant at 5906 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines.
Lull said they liked the location of the restaurant, which had a good business for many years.
The couple named the new restaurant after their wedding date, which was May 19, 2017, Lull said. Amy Lull is a nurse and Doug Lull owns a commercial cleaning business.
