One Iowa names new executive director
One Iowa, the state's largest LGBTQ organization, has named a new executive director, according to a One Iowa news release.
After a national search, One Iowa's search committee selected native Iowan Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel to lead the organization.
Hoffman-Zinnel has worked with the state's LGBTQ community for more than eight years, helping out with One Iowa initiatives and co-founding the LGBTQ Health and Wellness Conference, the release says. He's trained more than 1,000 health professionals and providers on LGBTQ inclusiveness, presenting on the subject at national and local conferences such as Eyes Open Iowa.
“LGBTQ rights are human rights, and this is where my passion lies,” Hoffman-Zinnel said in the release. “I am ready to continue working toward advancing equality and inclusivity.”
Donna Red Wing, the current executive director of the organization said she's pleased with the decision to hire Hoffman-Zinnel.
"Daniel is a well-regarded leader in Iowa's LGBT community," Red Wing said. "He is especially respected for his work around health and wellness issues. On a personal level, I know Daniel to be a man of extraordinary talent and integrity."
Red Wing announced her retirement in August after over four years of leading One Iowa.
Hoffman-Zinnel received his doctorate of education in leadership from Creighton University and has a master's in health studies from the University of Alabama. He previously served as director of education and leadership at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and as a respite provider at Lutheran Services in Iowa. He's also a member of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, the release notes.

Hoffman-Zinnel and his husband, Charles, married in the Urbandale United Church of Christ in 2010 and live in Bondurant with their three dogs.
“Iowa is where I have been born and raised,” Hoffman-Zinnel said. “I am excited and ready to continue working toward making the state I love more welcoming, safe and inclusive for all Iowans, including the LGBTQ community."
The One Iowa board of directors was responsible for hiring Hoffman-Zinnel, the release says. He will take over as executive director this January.
