Wells Fargo Arena will get a new $1.7 million sound system over the summer, 14 years after the facility opened.Â
Chris Connolly, general manager of Iowa Events Center, said the sound system should be in place by October.
It's needed, he said, because there are places in the arena that people can't hear very well on the old system and technology has come a long way since the arena opened in 2005.Â
Polk County supervisors approved spending for the new system by South Dakota-based Daktronics at a meeting Tuesday. The company also manufactured and installed Wells Fargo Arena's scoreboard display in 2015.
The county owns the Iowa Events Center, which includes the arena, the convention center and Hy-Vee Hall, all managed by Spectra, an event management company.
Connolly said big acts like the Dave Mathews Band bring their own sound systems to the arena. The new one is used for local events, such as graduations, state tournaments and Iowa Wild hockey games.Â

Spectra also received approval Tuesday to spend $35,150 to repair an escalator that was damaged.Â
Spectra uses $2 from most ticket sales, and $1 from some local events, for capital expenses. Three percent from food and beverage sales also is earmarked for capital expenses.Â
But the $1.7 million and escalator fix were "above and beyond" the $607,350 budget for capital expenses in the center's 2019-20 fiscal year.
