A list of Iowa City-area restaurants still offering delivery, pickup amid coronavirus
Editor's Note: This article has been updated since it's initial publication for accuracy and additional restaurants.
Finding places to get food has become more difficult over the past few days and restaurant owners are scrambling to find a way to stay in busy in a time of anxiety and uncertainty.
"We're one of the lucky business models that (includes) carry-out and delivery," said Steve Harding, owner of The Wedge Pizzeria. "We're staying steady, certainly our (walk-in) slice traffic is way down."
Less lucky have been the sit-down restaurants, who don't generally have the infrastructure in place to shift to delivery-only. Still, it's a leap that downtown restaurant St. Burch Tavern recently made with its Friday Fry to go (which may be repeated next week) and recently partnering with local delivery service, CHOMP.
"Now that we don't have dine-in guests, we've shifted to a to-go menu," said Benjamin Smart, executive chef and partner at St. Burch. "We've curated some larger format packaging for families that may be at home with kids and don't want to cook every night."
Customers can view that updated menu at the tavern's website: https://www.saintburchtavern.com/
Because of the closures and confusion caused by the coronavirus, the Press-Citizen has gathered a list of local restaurants that are delivering, as well as services providing delivery.
Russell Martin's map of meals
Russell Martin is a University of Iowa student who has been compiling a database of locations where Iowa City area residents can get food during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far he's put together 24 soup kitchens, food pantries and school district meal options which can be viewed through the link here.
"This map includes each location's operating hours (updated for the COVID-19 pandemic)," Martin explained in his e-mail to the Press-Citizen, "eligibility needed to receive aid, and other relevant information about each site."
Catholic Worker House
The Catholic Worker House has started running an "Emergency Free Breakfast Program" three days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday starting at 7:30 a.m. and running until 9:30 a.m. The food is being served "grab and go" style, according to a release.
"The Iowa City Catholic Worker community currently operates a Free Little Food Pantry accessible 24/7 without human contact, and a weekend soup kitchen and drop-in center." The release continues. "The group has also transitioned their weekend potluck ministry to a 'grab and go' system - while still offering free food, coffee, showers, and laundry to poor and homeless people in Iowa City."
Barre3, a University Heights fitness center, recently partnered with No Kid Hungry, a national nonprofit dedicated to solving child hunger.
According to a release sent to the Press-Citizen, Barre3 is marking its class packages off by 10% and is donating 10% of its proceeds to No Kid Hungry. Since the fitness studio has had to close its doors, the fitness classes purchased can be used via the Barre3's Iowa City livestream.
