Woman pulls gun on band, steals one of their cars in Des Moines, police say
A woman was charged Sunday with pointing a gun at members of a band and stealing one of their vehicles in Des Moines, police said.
Rebecca Sue Brandt, 52, of Waukee pointed a handgun at one of the band members at a home in the 1600 block of E. Grand Ave. in the city's Capitol East neighborhood before stealing one of their vehicles, authorities said. She was charged with robbery, eluding and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, court records show.
The five band members had recently returned from a concert and were unloading their equipment when Brandt showed up, uninvited, at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the backyard of the home, according to a Des Moines police report. The group ran inside to take cover when they saw she had a gun, authorities said.
One of the band members screamed for her to leave and she responded, but he could not understand what she said. She pointed the gun directly at him and he thought he was about to die, he told officers.
He slammed the back door and called police as Brandt got into another band member's vehicle, according to the report. The group had left their cars unlocked and running.
The band followed Brandt in another vehicle until they saw police attempt to pull her over, authorities said. When officers tried to pull her over, she sped off, at times exceeding the speed limit by 25 mph, officers wrote in a criminal complaint.
Police used a pursuit intervention maneuver to bring the car to a stop; officers described the band member's vehicle afterward as crashed and disabled.
After Brandt was arrested, the band members told police they had not seen her before she showed up at the house. She was booked at 5 a.m. at the Polk County Jail and her bond was set at $37,000.
Brandt did not have an attorney listed in online court documents.
