The Fighting Burrito, a popular Ames restaurant in Campustown, opened its second location four years ago in the Nationwide Insurance building in downtown Des Moines’ Western Gateway.

It offers California Baja-style Mexican meals in a fast-casual environment.

“We have the sculpture park across from us, great bars and other hotspots in the area that draw people here. They come to us for a quick bite to eat before they go out. We’re also at the end of the Nationwide building, so you can reach us via the skywalk,” general manager Treasure Jones said.

Jones spoke with The Des Moines Register about the business.

Q: Who are your customers?

A: Ninety-eight percent of our customers are downtown Des Moines business professionals. We also deliver to a lot of downtown Des Moines residents in the East Village area up to the Capitol.

Q: What is your delivery area?

A: All of downtown from 31st Street to the west and East 12th Street to the east, and as far north as Interstate 235. It’s like a big square.

Q: What menu item is popular?

A: The best are our flavor fighter options. They are these predetermined burritos that we’ve taken the time to put together based on what on our line tastes the best. People will come up and say, “I want the No.1 or No. 7,” and we whip it up really quickly, so they can get in and out quickly.

Q: What do people like about your ingredients?

A: Everything we make here is fresh. We cook the beef, pork and chicken, we make five fresh salsas every day, as well as the guacamole and five sour creams. The only thing we don’t make are the toppings, since we don’t have a black olive farm or jalapeno farm.

Q: What compliments do you receive?

A: One of the biggest is our great service. We always have smiles. We’re always trying to help our customers who maybe aren’t having the best day. We want to be part of making their day great. We also are told how really quick and good we are at what we do. We serve quality, fresh food, really quick.

Q: What is your capacity?

A: We seat probably 50 to 60. We have a really big dining space, but most get it to go. But if you want to take a minute and sit down, be out of your office during the lunch hour, stay here and eat.

Q: How many employees do you have?

A: We have 12 employees.
