The Fighting Burrito in Des Moines is permanently closed, owner Matthew Goodman announced Tuesday in a Facebook post.
The downtown restaurant at 309 13th St., was the final Fighting Burrito location in operation. Goodman had announced the closure of his Ames location in May, which he opened 14 years ago.
"I have a lot of pride in what we have built here, so it is, of course, sad to see this place I created go away," Goodman wrote on the restaurant's Facebook page. "I understand you may share a twinge of this sadness as well with me — such is the natural response to losing things we love. I will miss you all as customers, be you a burrito bowl lover or a late-night krispie treat purchaser."
The Fighting Burrito was known for its list of burritos and menu of quick, build-your-own meal specials, as well as its community involvement and eco-conscious delivery service.
The restaurant was originally known as Flying Burrito but changed its name in 2009 due to a trademark dispute with another restaurant. The Fighting Burrito had an Ankeny location at 502 N. Ankeny Blvd. from 2015 to 2017.
The restaurant received a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in 2016 from then-Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.
In his Facebook post, Goodman pointed to the restaurant's environmentally friendly vehicles, the practice of buying local whenever possible, inclusive employment and financial support of local causes as reasons to celebrate the past 14 years.
"The Fighting Burrito was not just a burrito shop: it was a collection of interesting and loving souls fighting for good through hard work, respect, kindness … and burritos," he wrote. "We wanted to build a home for everyone: we're glad you came to visit."
