Your Morning Juice, Aug. 17: A deep-fried Iowa State Fair edition of Your Morning Juice ... on a stick!
Happy second weekend of the Iowa State Fair, Des Moines. Did you catch Pentatonix at the Grandstand last weekend? Or have you spent your days watching Iowans snooze with livestock? Either way, here's a look at all things food and music from the first days of the fair ...
We ranked every relevant Grandstand lineup, ever.
That's right. From 1970 to 2017, Juice writers ranked each year's lineup from worst to best. Some of the highlights? 1992 with Ringo Starr and 1973 with Elton John. A lowlight? 1988 with the Oak Ridge Boys. Read the list in full here.
We have a favorite new fair food!
The winner of the annual new fair food contest is ... Pork-Almighty. From the Register's food reporter, Brian Taylor Carlson: "The base is a 32-ounce soft drink with a bowl on top that acts as a lid for the drink. And that bowl is filled with crunchy twisty fries, pulled pork, queso cheese sauce, Cookies barbecue sauce, more queso, diced onions, green peppers and then more shredded cheese is sprinkled on top. It weighs in at just over four pounds ($12) and has more than 1,800 calories." Dig. In.
Happy hour highlight:
- Spend your happy hour at the fair cooling off with one of Bauder's peppermint bars.
More things to do at the fair:
- Catch a free show. Not sure which one? Use the Juice guide.
- Dine out using the Register's Food Finder mobile application.
- Kid Rock, the highest paid artist in Iowa State Fair history, closes the Grandstand on Sunday.
